Elegance, Jazz, Bourbon, and Ratchetness.
When Jackie + Greg described their vision for their wedding, they said that they “love the lightness of champagne but also want the smokiness and power of a bourbon-rich old fashioned”. I think they were in turn describing themselves and the layers of who they are. Jackie and Greg are both cardiologists, but just because they’re out there saving lives, does not mean they don’t know how to get down. They are sophisticated and cultured and they are wild and uninhibited. They are mutli-faceted people and capturing the complexity and beauty of that was something that was really important to us.
It’s not every wedding you get to capture a mansion, fireworks, vintage cars, a sax player in a bowler hat, a speakeasy, a club and still, somehow, all of that is outshone by the first look. Jackie + Greg are so spectacularly into each other it’s infectious. The second they saw each other it was like nothing else existed.
“From the jump we wanted to show this gorgeous moment during their first look: the tears, the gasps, the fits…Because truly they both did look ‘fine as f@#$'. “
For their longer film, expanding on and showcasing the magic of that dichotomy was our number one goal. Throughout the edit we wanted to highlight that elegance and the authenticity of J+G but by still staying true to their exuberance. From the jump we wanted to show this gorgeous moment during their first look: the tears, the gasps, the fits; and then immediately cut that with their true selves. Because truly they both did look “fine as f@#$”.
Nothing could drive that point home more than J’s own words. When she talks about loving Disney princesses as well as 90s R&B idols, that informed so much of our visuals. The contrast between regal shots within the mansion to the wild dance floor speaks so much to this couple’s personality. That’s why the overall edit has this early 2000s music video vibe but never loses the thread of just how grand and epic the whole night was.
And ultimately that’s why we ended the film the way we did. Take our editing and storytelling out of the equation; only this couple and their community could close this film out the way it needed to. Even with all the stunning decor, a gorgeous venue, and even a fireworks display; what everyone was really there for was to hear the beat drop and turn up to celebrate these two well into the morning.
The Teaser
Jackie + Greg’s teaser took inspiration from iconic 90s R&B music videos like Dru Hill’s "These Are The Times" and Biggie’s "Hypnotize" and the way they weave cinematic storytelling with music video elements in a way that makes them more than the sum of their parts. There’s also a nod to classic 90s music video elements, like ones you see in Brandy’s “I WannaBe Down” - a phone call that takes us into our couple’s relationship. We wanted this film to be refined and elegant, but with a distinct sense of swagger.
